A few months later pessimistic opponents Cayenne replaced by bewilderment – despite the skepticism, the crossover does not become fatal failure, but quite the contrary – the most sold car in the history of 2018-2019 Porsche.
The total circulation of the world ‘Cayenne’ amounted to 77,822 copies only in the last year, and sales figures for already hinted at a new record.
The newly bestseller firmly put the company on its feet, by paying out of their ‘pocket’ the further development of the model range.
Expectedly, after an unprecedented commercial success, the leaders of the German brand decided on the further development of off-road series, giving fans of the Cayenne a new alternative in the adjacent alcove – 2018-2019 Porsche Macan.
At this time, the public reaction is fundamentally different: the fans are looking forward to the premiere, and skeptics prefer to remain silent, remembering the former haste.
The debut of the new crossover will be held next month in the international motor show in Los Angeles.
We already know that the Macan will be smaller and cheaper than its ‘older brother’, and the fact that the design of new items will be more fit the classic styling ‘2018-2019 Porsche’, he says that in front of us, probably, a new hit.
On the eve of the official demonstration in LA journalists from Autocar lucky enough to take part in the final road test Macan, together with the father of a new model – the main project manager Hans-Jürgen Vohlerom.
Looking at the crossover from a distance, without the ability to correlate its size with the neighboring car, Macan quite easy to confuse with the escort of the Cayenne, which accompanied the ‘junior’ in the test process.

Impressive dynamics, excellent handling
We set off and went to leave the parking lot. From the first seconds, we were surprised by the crossover dynamics at low revs and acceleration rate. Official data on the high-speed characteristics of the Macan not yet been published, but I am free to assume that the version of Turbo overclocking up to 100 kilometers per hour takes something like 5 seconds – enough to outdo stepbrother Audi SQ5.
Our model was equipped with the optional transmission PDK. As soon as we drove on the highway, it became apparent that the upper gear ranges ‘box’ is quite broad –
operating in automatic mode, gearshift speed rarely raised above the level of 2000, which did not stop to move comfortably in the flow of the surrounding vehicles.
Emotionally, the engine can also be estimated on five-plus – with an average pressed the accelerator to the salon came the pleasant roar of the outstanding engineering creation.
In addition to the 3.6-liter V6 unit, 2018-2019 Porsche also plans to equip the Turbo version of the 3-liter V-shaped “Six” from Audi.
Version Macan S, in turn, will receive petrol 335-hp engine with turbocharging and version Macan S Diesel will be equipped with common-rail turbodiesel capacity of 254 horsepower.
The company also plans to replenish range of engines in several 4-cylinder engines. By the way, Macan will be the first model of the brand, which will receive the ‘Quartet’ with the 2018-2019 Porsche 968 time (1995).
Official data on these power plants yet, but we can assume that they will be the 2-liter petrol and diesel engines from Volkswagen capacity of 225 and 177 horsepower respectively.
With regard to the movement of the car in a straight line – the 2018-2019 Porsche engineers were tasked to achieve best-in-class dynamics. We managed it or not, we will know after the official release.
At the moment, there is no reason to doubt that the masters of the company will be able to achieve the stated objectives.
What struck me most of all – excellent handling crossover. When the wide boulevards of Los Angeles have been left behind, and we drove along the winding country roads – Macan demonstrated excellent cornering technique with a sharp entry, minimal roll and the ability to cope with the side loads without causing understeer, even at extreme angles.
There is no doubt that the Macan can challenge masthead BMW X3 in high-speed competition on the asphalt. Judging by the sensations from the passenger seat, the crossover is already showing all the prerequisites to become a kind of Cayman in the world of off-road vehicles.
Equally surprising – ride comfort, even on 21-inch wheels with 265/45 tires. Despite the relatively rigid suspension, she copes with most road irregularities – from small to medium and large potholes and speed bumps. The same Audi Q5 with the same set of drives and ‘rubber’ was barely able to solve this problem with the same success.
Like the Cayenne, Macan is designed primarily for the movement on the road. However, Vohler enthusiastically praised off-road capability of the new 2018-2019 Porsche, claiming that his offspring will overcome any competitor in the class in the rugged terrain.
Unfortunately, it was too late to leave the relative safety of the highway and race around multiple narrow gravel roads, which in these parts is available in abundance.
We note only that the sporty character of the crossover and the Herculean efforts of 2018-2019 Porsche engineers on the maximum reduction of the center of gravity, did not prevent the crossover to get used to lshy ground clearance than that of Q5 (Q5 clearance – 200 mm).
Moreover, Macan is also superior to its counterpart from the corners Ingoldshtadta Congress and longitudinal terrain.
Is the game worth the candle?
2018-2019 Porsche aims to create a crossover that could attract the maximum audience – from young mothers to the loyal fans of the brand and lovers of relative permeability in sports cars.
